Sophocles: The Tragedies

The complete surviving tragedies of Sophocles -- including Oedipus Rex and Antigone -- in an 1882 English edition.

About this work

Sophocles wrote well over 100 plays across a long career in 5th-century BCE Athens, and won the City Dionysia drama competition more times than any other playwright -- yet only seven of his tragedies survive complete today, the rest lost to the same slow attrition of copying and recopying that claimed so much of ancient literature. What remains includes Oedipus Rex, still one of the most structurally influential plays ever written, and Antigone, whose central conflict between civil law and personal conscience has been staged and restaged for 2,500 years. This 1882 edition presents all seven surviving tragedies in English.
