Buddhist Texts

Foundational Buddhist scripture across the tradition's major branches -- Pali Canon texts from Theravada Buddhism, Mahayana sutras, and the historical translations that first brought them to Western readers, alongside original-language sources and facsimiles where they survive.

About this work

Buddhism produced one of the largest bodies of religious literature in human history, spanning roughly 2,500 years and multiple canonical languages -- Pali, Sanskrit, Chinese, Tibetan -- as the tradition spread from northern India across Asia and split into distinct schools with their own scriptural collections. This Oedio gathers foundational texts across that range: the Dhammapada, a collection of the Buddha's sayings and one of the most widely translated Buddhist texts in any language, alongside the 19th-century scholarly translations -- Max Muller's Sacred Books of the East series chief among them -- that first made these texts broadly available outside Asia.
