The Arabian Nights

Three complete English editions of the Thousand and One Nights, spanning 1910–1924.

About this work

A frame story about survival through storytelling: Scheherazade, married to a king who has vowed to execute each new wife after their wedding night, keeps herself alive by telling him an unfinished tale every evening, always leaving him wanting the ending enough to spare her one more day. Inside that frame sits a vast, centuries-deep accumulation of stories -- Aladdin, Ali Baba, Sinbad the Sailor -- gathered from Persian, Arabic, Indian, and Egyptian oral traditions over roughly a thousand years before European translators began compiling and publishing them in the 18th and 19th centuries, the era these particular editions come from.
