Inside that frame sits a vast, centuries-deep accumulation of stories -- Aladdin, Ali Baba, Sinbad the Sailor -- gathered from Persian, Arabic, Indian, and Egyptian oral traditions over roughly a thousand years before European translators began compiling and publishing them in the 18th and 19th centuries, the era these particular editions come from.
