The oldest of the great tragedians and the master of Athenian comedy, together in one 1900 anthology -- Aeschylus's Agamemnon and Aristophanes's comedies.
Aeschylus is the earliest of the three great Athenian tragedians whose work survives, and his Agamemnon -- the first play of the Oresteia trilogy -- is among the oldest complete Greek tragedies known, dramatizing the homecoming and murder of the Trojan War's victorious commander. Aristophanes worked in a completely different register: Old Comedy, sharp political satire aimed at living Athenian politicians and institutions, frequently obscene, and unlike anything the tragedians attempted. That the same 1900 anthology could bind both together says something about how the 19th century approached Greek drama as a single continuous tradition, tragedy and comedy alike.
